The case of three inmates who escaped from an Arizona prison last month took a Rim Country turn Saturday morning when federal marshals arrested Claudia Washburn at her gas station at Jake's Corner on Arizona 188. Washburn, the mother of escaped convict John McCluskey, was arrested on suspicion of aiding the fugitives by giving them money and hiding information from investigators.
After convicted murderers McCluskey, Tracy Province and Daniel Renwick broke out of a privately run prison (see editorial below), they became separated in the desert. Renwick was recaptured in Colorado, but McCluskey, Province and an accomplice, Casslyn Welch, hijacked a truck in Kingman and made their way to Flagstaff.
From there, an acquaintance helped them get to Jake's Corner. There they got money and a car from Washburn, a 1997 gold Nissan Sentra bearing Arizona license plate 620 PFV.
Now the trio has been linked to the murder of an Oklahoma couple near Santa Rosa, N.M. Their burned bodies were found Wednesday in a camper. Marshals coordinating a nationwide manhunt say they are "very close" to closing in on the fugitives.
