People's Gazette Editor:
Like so many of you did this week, Monica and I walked our son to his first day of school.
It is a good time to pause and take a hard look at our education system. In Arizona, we are consistently ranked at the bottom of the pack. We can and we must transform education in Arizona.
Yesterday I had the honor of standing with teachers, parents and students as I presented my K-12 education plan. This comprehensive plan, "Making Arizona Schools Work, " is a road map for meeting my singular goal: to move Arizona schools from the bottom ten to the top ten in national ranking in the next ten years.
My Making Arizona Schools Work plan calls for:
* Early education including full-day kindergarten at every neighborhood school statewide.
* Revamping the state's out-of-date school financing system and ending tax giveaways that rob education funding.
* An end to the rigid, scripted, micromanaged approach to education that is currently in use in too many state schools.
The current governor has no plan for education, and, in her own words has "cut education to the bone". Classes are too large, teachers are working without support, we have schools without shade or playground equipment.
Our children only get one shot at receiving a high quality education. Let's make sure it is the best one possible. Let's make Arizona schools work.

Terry Goddard
