MOGOLLON CONNECTION EDITORIAL

It was recently brought to the attention of The Mogollon Connection that campaign signs and banners related to the upcoming election for constable are being stolen in Payson and the surrounding areas.
Unfortunately, it is not the first time we have received reports of this kind of activity. It turns out, campaign signs went missing in Star Valley during the last election cycle as well.
This time however, it appears that one candidate in particular is being targeted. There have been instances in which this candidate’s signs were removed, when others were left behind at the same location.
Needless to say, if this is actually politically motivated, it goes beyond being merely criminal. It strikes at the core of our democratic process. Perhaps it will turn out to be a simple case of juvenile delinquency. We hope so, and doesn’t that speak volumes about the state of things today.
Retired Marine Corps Colonel Bill Sahno described the situation best:
“Regardless of who is running for office, what is reported here is flat out criminal activity. The candidates for office know the law and the regulations regarding political signs. Evidently, some of our citizens, or non-citizens, as the case may be, DO NOT!
“Such activity should be exposed to the public and condemned.
“Many people throughout history have fought and died for our citizens to exercise the freedom to vote. The placing of signs is part of the process and price they paid for us to enjoy the freedom to vote for the candidate of our choice.”
Still, perhaps the more important question is why these campaign signs have become as ubiquitous and important as they are today in the first place. What do we really learn about a candidate from a sign and a slogan?
Jefferson said, “Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government.”
How well-informed can we become by way of a small sign in someone’s front yard?
Get involved, become informed, attend a debate. Earn the trust that Jefferson and his like gifted us with.
