Payson, Ariz. (June 5, 2011) – Angela Elam has been selected as the new ranger for the Payson Ranger District and begins her new assignment on June 20, announced forest officials today.
“We eagerly welcome Angie,” said Acting Tonto National Forest Supervisor Tom Klabunde. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for working with the public and taking care of natural resources. The Tonto National Forest is one of the most complex and heavily visited national forests in the nation. We are extremely pleased that Angie will be a vital member of the forest leadership team. ”
An Arizona native, Elam has two Arizona university degrees: a bachelor’s in forest management, Northern Arizona University, and a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Arizona.
Currently, Elam is a Deputy District Ranger on the Santa Catalina Ranger District on the Coronado National Forest where she also worked as a landscape architect.
“I am looking forward to getting involved with a vibrant community and county on challenging projects as the Forest Service embarks on its second century of national stewardship,” said Elam.
Elam’s other national forest assignments include the White River National Forest, Colorado; the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Arizona; the Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania; and the Ashley National Forest, Utah. She began her career as a seasonal firefighter on the Mesa Ranger District, Tonto National Forest.
Elam replaces Ed Armenta, who served as the Payson District Ranger for the past decade. Armenta is now a forest supervisor on the Inyo National Forest, California.
District Ranger Don Luhrsen, Pleasant Valley, has been the Acting Payson District Ranger since Armenta’s departure earlier this month.
