Councilor urges others to adopt SV warning system

PERSPECTIVE

By Gary Coon
Star Valley Town Councilor

A day doesn't go buy that I don't hear a comment on how great the weather is here in Rim country. Although we have mild temperatures and don't have to deal with tornadoes and hurricanes, there is one weather issue we must concern ourselves with and that of course is wildfires.

Human carelessness and mother nature can quickly turn a beautiful setting into a horrendous environment if a wildfire suddenly emerges. This concern for our safety has motivated the creation of an Emergency Alert System for Star Valley. With the cooperation of town staff and the residents of Star Valley, we have enrolled 900 contacts in our call system.

The system is simple. Once enrolled, if an emergency occurs, residents will receive a phone call from an automated dialing service explaining the emergency and instructions. There is no cost to residents and of course partipation is voluntary.

Our goal is to get 100% participation. If you have a residence in Star Valley and have not registered at Town Hall, I urge you to do so. We have excellent fire and police protection but if an emergency such as wildfire should occur suddenly without warning, they may not have time to inform residents.

It is our responsibility to be prepared. Everyone should have an evacuation plan.  I would also advise other surrounding communities to consider adopting an emergency alert system. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to offer free pointers on how I set up Star Valley's system. I can be contacted at Star Valley Town Hall at (928) 472-7752.
