PERSPECTIVE
It's Sunday morning, and I'm serenely perpetuating a lifetime tradition of the Sunday newspaper over several cups of coffee. It's a ritual I refuse to give up just because I live in a small town.
And today, the Sunday Arizona Republic is especially rewarding. Here are just three reasons:
E.J. Montini writes his column in riotous verse to "celebrate" our state legislature's deliberation of whether to name an Arizona Poet Laureate. Here's a sample:
"Our kids were kicked off welfare.
Our sick are out of luck.
Yet with audacious fanfare
Our leaders pass the buck...
"Some say the bill is silly.
But what we've got is worse.
With things so willy-nilly
Why not trade vice for verse."
And it just gets better from there. It may be the best thing Montini has ever written.
In Sunday's Arizona Living section, you can read about the downside of being single: "The world of Jack in the Box at 2:30 a.m., texting your ex, and going home alone -- again."
But on the eve of Valentine's Day, there is new hope. An article in the Business Sunday section reports that online dating is gaining momentum -- "Nearly 1 in 5 recently married couples has met through an online-dating and matchmaking site, according to some estimates."
Of course you can read it all by going to www.azcentral.com. Better yet, you can run out and get your own copy of today's Sunday paper to hold and savor. Or, best of all, you can pick up the phone and call 1-800-332-6733 for home delivery -- so next Sunday you can partake of this time-honored tradition, complete with hundreds of dollars in coupons, color comics and the latest Safeway and Bashas' inserts.
But excuse me. I haven't touched the sports section yet...
