RANT & RAVE: Posted March 14, 2010

Editor’s note: Each week we print a selection of anonymous rants and raves submitted by our readers. Keep them under 150 words, free of profanity and personal attacks, and have at it. You need not sign your submission, which you may e-mail to peoplesgazette@gmail.com or mail to Gazette Editor, 7736 N. Toya Vista Road, Payson, AZ 85541. The views expressed are not necessarily those of the Gazette staff.

Where were the Tea Partiers? I thought the loosely run group was against big government and the raising of taxes. If this is true they should have played a big part in the local election just held and been vocal against the Home Rule and School Override issues. I expected to see picketing on the streets and protests at town hall. But where were they...is the organization hypocritical?

So the Roundup is blaming Mike Vogel's losing the election for town council on Bob Edwards. Boy, what is their beef with Bob? This is all on Mike. Now I know the Roundup thinks Mike walks on water...we can see it in the "reporting" the Roundup does. But those of us who pay attention to town council meetings know better. Mike is a big bully and has treated citizens who come before council (at least back when citizens were actually encouraged to speak) with disdain. No, the citizens who are discerning, did not ask Bob how to vote...we decided on our own. Fred Carpenter we hope will be a better listener of the citizens, solicit input and not pander to the realtors and developers in town. Each councilor and the mayor as well need to remember they represent the citizens of this town.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If anything good came out of the town council election it was the defeat of Mike Vogel. The pro-growthers in charge of the council should take heed. If a councilor is as blatantly biased as Mike Vogel, the voters of this town will rise up and turn him out. And this has nothing to do with Bob Edwards, as a certain newspaper claimed. The message is clear: the public wants a more transparent council.
I was sorry to see Chris Benjamin defeated for town council in Star Valley.  His voice needs to be heard on the subject of water.  The town council needs to be wary of any deals with the Payson devil -- Buzz Walker.
We have tried to support the movie theater, even with its terrible sound, quality, and lack of 3D. Over the last few years, we learned that unless the movie was in the first large theater, you had better prepare for poor quality. Why is this, when it is not even THAT old? But, the last straw was the passes we won from KMOG. How convenient that all of the four main theaters (the two large and the two middle size with the newer movies) are always “NO PASSES.” Using them in the last two is a waste of time. So much for our local customer service. We no longer will support the local movie theater and are better off attending the movie out of town, or waiting until it hits the DVD market as at home we have better quality. It is not the attendants/students faults and they hear all the complaints which we have personally witnessed. How sad.
I know the blog editor has said in e-mails that he does not intend to write about what happened to him at KMOG on the blog.  I think it needs a wider audience, so let’s see if he’ll run this. From what I understand, he was told he was no longer welcome to appear in his regular Thursday slot on “Rim Country Forum.” He was told the reason was that he was involved in the new newspaper, The Mogollon Connection. He was told KMOG saw the new paper as added competition for advertising revenue and therefore KMOG didn’t want it to come to town. That it was an out of town venture and not a “local” operation like the Roundup (which, in truth, is owned and directed by a Kansas company).
(Editor’s note: The above account is essentially accurate.)
Just read the Roundup editorial about the college's financial difficulties. Since Editor Tom Brossart and obvious editorial writer Pete Aleshire also teach at GCC, isn’t that a conflict of interest? Shouldn’t they be hands-off when it comes to writing about the college, especially political and financial matters?
I am a chamber member and a fan of diverse journalism and more than one opinion. I see my chamber is still making sweetheart backroom deals with the Roundup. I ask the two Johns (Stanton and Naughton), where is the conflict of interest?
Coming back from Flagstaff the other day, the spectacular view of the Rim Country was ruined by columns of smoke belching from burning piles around pine. Surely there is a better way to dispose of this stuff.
Why doesn’t the Roundup cover the drought with the same intensity that it covers a few winter storms – with a blaring front page headline. Could it be that moisture is good for growth and the lack of moisture is best swept under the realtor’s carpet? We don’t need a newspaper to tell us we’ve had a wet winter. But it would sure be nice if we had some honest reporting on the lingering drought that one wet winter won’t erase.
