Residents and property owners of Mesa del Caballo have voted unanimously for C.C. Cragin (Blue Ridge Reservoir) as their preferred water source, becoming the first Northern Gila County Community besides Payson to take advantage of that resource.
The vote was taken after a series of community meetings at which Payson Water Company/Brooke Utilities President Robert Hardcastle presented a number of options, each of which came with a hefty price tag. Hardcastle wanted a community mandate to present to the Arizona Corporation Commission, which has directed him to find an adequate water supply for a community that suffers chronic shortages.
The C.C. Cragin pipeline will run down Houston Mesa Road right past Mesa del, and the Forest Service is currently considering several sites adjacent to the community for a water treatment plant.
Some 400 ballots were mailed to Mesa del property owners and residents, and the 200 returned ballots were tabulated by a Valley law firm. The results:
C.C. Cragin—– 167
Water Conservation—– 5
Drill Deep Wells—–8
Long-Term Hauling—–1
Pipeline from Payson—–3
Spoiled ballots (not counted)—–16
