The first First Friday on Main Street was held on a cold and blustery Friday evening in May, 2007. This is what it looked like as celebrants huddled to look at antique cars in front of Gasoline Alley.
Main Street celebrates the third anniversary of its popular First Friday on Main Street event this Friday, May 7.
During the monthly event, musicians can be heard up and down Main Street, artists are featured in the two co-op art galleries, authors sign books, and benefits are held for popular causes like the Humane Society of Central Arizona and the food bank.
Many stores offer special sales during First Friday hours of 5-8 p.m. Some offer door prizes.
Monthly themes bring out colorful decorations. The dual themes for May are Cinco de Mayo and the Third Anniversary celebration.
John Carpino will perform live at Bootleg Alley Antiques & Art. Joining in the celebration, renowned chef and Gazette columnist Gary Bedsworth will be grilling gourmet brats from Charlies Meats. Brats with trimmings, chips, and a soda can be purchased for $5. All net proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of Central Arizona.
See's Chocolates can be purchased from the Soroptimists on Bootleg Alley's porch. Donations can be made and raffle tickets bought at the Humane Society table.
Meanwhile, Down The Street Art Gallery at 703 West Main Street is hosting its 1st Annual Salsa Competition. Competitors are Linda Nannizzi, Michael Richardson and the winner of the salsa competition held at Payson High School in the Culinary Arts class taught by Devon Wells.
Each competitor will receive a beautiful wood server designed by Down the Street artist Dan Basinski, and the winner will be presented an original framed hot pepper oil painting by Down the Street artist Minette. Come and enjoy some of the best locally created art in Rim Country, then taste and vote for your favorite salsa.
First Friday continues at the Humane Society of Central Arizona Thrift Shop, currently offering sets of dishes, miscellaneous plates, saucers and bowls, and all drinking glasses at half price.
Award winning chef LeRoy Watson has graciously accepted the salsa challenge and will be making his famous salsa at the Thrift Shop. Please come, shop, taste and vote for LeRoy’s famous salsa.
At Green Mountain Emporium, enjoy the sounds of Gary Cordell while you savor a piece of anniversary cake.
The Payson Senior Center will offer music for dancing by Bob and Helen from the Rye Bar. Tacos, salsa and chips will be available in the dining room.
Meanwhile at the Senior Center Thrift Store, Wayne Todd will provide live music, and all purchases from $1 to $100 are 10 percent off.
