Dems, GOP, Libertarians partner for civil town hall

(Phoenix, AZ) - Project Civil Discourse (a group of over 20 Arizona organizations), in collaboration with the Arizona Republican, Democratic and Libertarian Parties, present Arizona's Sales Tax Referendum Town Hall: A Demonstration of Civil Dialogue and Discussion.

The leaders of Arizona's political parties, Democratic Chairman Don Bivens, Libertarian Chairman Michael Kielsky, and Republican Chairman Randy Pullen have joined together to promote civility in our state and the federal government. The Chairmen and their associates will participate in this nonpartisan town hall to discuss with the public the implications of Prop. 100.

By promoting the importance of civil discourse in our state Michael Kielsky, Randy Pullen, and Don Bivens are demonstrating their understanding of the desire for public conversations about the critical issues facing Arizona.

"There are only a few topics that get the attention of voters faster than taxes," said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen. "And with a temporary sales tax increase currently on the ballot in Arizona, there is no better time to participate in a thoughtful dialog on the issue. Getting Democrats and Republicans to agree on any issue can be pretty difficult. But we all agree this type of event only enhances our ability to solve the problems we face together as Arizonans."

"Arizona is facing big challenges that call for serious discourse," said Don Bivens, Arizona Democratic Party Chairman. "Political parties may differ on approaches to the budget crisis or Prop. 100, but an event like this should foster better understanding and respect of viewpoints beyond our own."

Libertarian Party Chairman Michael Kielsky added, "We are eager to engage with others of differing and opposing viewpoints, to hear their positions and have an opportunity to present ours, in a manner that is civil, courteous, and encourages active listening, genuine exchange, and dialogue."

The town hall will open with a presentation from Peter Burns, former state budget director and senior advisor, about the budget and how the outcome to the sales tax vote will affect Arizona. Attendees will then participate in roundtable discussions to share ideas and understand other points of view on this important topic. The goal of the discussions is not to achieve a particular outcome, but to demonstrate how an issue such as taxes can be discussed in a civil and respectful way.
