Sign of summer's demise: NGC county fair is here

The 57th Annual Northern Gila County Fair unfolds this weekend, Sept. 9-11, at the Payson Event Center across from Mazatzal Casino on Arizona 87 at the south end of Payson.

Judging takes place on Thursday, Sept. 8, and the fair opens to the public at 9 a.m. Friday.  Exhibits close at 6 p.m.  The exhibition tent is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Other fair events include the Turn and Burn Series Barrel Race and Pole Bending at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept 7.

Friday events include the llama judging and show at 10 a.m., buddy showmanship at 3 p.m., open livestock show at 4 p.m., 4H-FFA livestock judging and show at 5 p.m., 4H speed events at 6 p.m. and 4D Barrel Race at 7:30 p.m.  Arena admission is $5 per car.

Saturday events include 4H and open horse show at 8 a.m., small livestock at 9 a.m., livestock auction at 5 p.m.

Other events include an archery shoot at 10 a.m. Friday, a dance and gymnastics performance following the livestock auction, and a scarecrow construction contest.

The demoltion derby will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
