New museum exhibit celebrates Arizona's past

The Arizona Capitol Museum, in collaboration with the Peggy Slusser Memorial Library, the Postal History Foundation and the Phoenix Philatelic Association, invites you to the opening of a new exhibit, WORDS FROM THE WEST: ARIZONA STORIES AND STAMPS.

The September 20th opening will highlight the soon-to-be released Arizona Statehood Commemorative Stamp. At 4 p.m. members of the Phoenix Stamp Club will display historic Arizona stamps from their private collections, and the entire museum will be open for “after hours” viewing.

Post offices in Arizona, particularly those in rural Arizona, tell the history of Arizona’s people, places and progress. As we move closer to Arizona’s Centennial this exhibit will sharpen your knowledge of Arizona’s history. The exhibit illustrates Arizona’s colorful past using United States Postal Service stamps, mementos and artifacts.

If you can’t join us in person, explore images from the Postal History Foundation’s archives online at the Arizona Memory Project (AMP). Click here to learn more about Postal History Foundation collections.

AMP and the exhibit are funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program.

The exhibit will continue through the upcoming Centennial year. Please visit the Arizona Capitol Museum website for more information on museum hours, exhibits and other resources http://www.lib.az.us/museum or call 602 926 3620.

Free Parking for Museum guests in Wesley Bolin Plaza at 17th Avenue and Washington St., Phoenix

Through more than twenty exhibits the 55,000 square foot Arizona Capitol Museum connects people with Arizona government – past and present. The Arizona State Library, a division of the Secretary of State, is the oldest cultural institution in Arizona, dating to the organization of the Territory in 1863.
