[Gazette Blog Editor's note: The following is excerpted from E.J. Montini's column in the July 17 Arizona Republic:]
Our reaction to the overflow of Central American children crossing illegally into the United States has answered one nagging national question: Is ours a Christian nation?
No.
That argument was settled by the angry mobs who are willing to to stand in front of buses filled with kids to stop them from entering processing and detention centers.
~~~~~~~~
There's a rush in Congress to change federal law so that we can ship the migrant kids back to their home countries more quickly, perhaps even before we're certain they won't face any danger.... Our reasons for changing the law aren't benevolent....
It's not that Americans lack compassion. We send money to the Red Cross after disasters. We support charities. But these kids from Central America? There are a lot of them.
They frighten us.
At some point the cost of dealing with them could cut into our lifestyles, and that brings out what we really are: mercenary.
