45-minute road closure begins at noon
As
part of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s continuing efforts
to widen State Route 260, crews will close the highway between mileposts
270-272, approximately 20 miles east of Payson, at noon Thursday, Oct.
11.
The highway will be closed for up to 45 minutes to provide a safe work zone for blasting operations. Blasting
on the project uses controlled explosives to excavate and remove rock
as crews continue to clear the path for the new roadway.
The
Doubtful Canyon widening project will construct three miles of
four-lane divided highway between the previously improved Kohl's Ranch
and Christopher Creek segments along the SR 260 roadway. The widening of
SR 260 at Doubtful Canyon is the fifth of six projects designed to
widen the highway from Star Valley to the Mogollon Rim. The $29 million project is scheduled for completion by spring 2013.
Drivers
should adjust their travel schedules to avoid the closure or allow
extra time to reach their destinations. Once the highway is reopened,
motorists will continue traveling in an active construction zone. Speed limits are reduced and a width restriction of 10 feet remains in place. Message boards, temporary barricades, and signs will guide drivers through the work zone..
ADOT
advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow
down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
