YOUR SOURCE FOR TRUTH

Be wary of latest 4-year college story

The newest story in the local newspaper about progress in negotiations with ASU to bring a 4-year university to Payson is based almost entirely on "a source close to the negotiations."

Back in the days when the Roundup had a reputation for journalistic integrity such a story wouldn't even be printed.  The story could have been substantiated with a little sleuthing and a couple of well-placed phone calls.

We would advise anybody against banking on a university in Payson based on such shallow reporting.

I noticed the headline when I walked by the newspaper racks at Basha's yesterday -- and noticed that it clearly said that "nothing was in writing" yet -- except in the Roundup.

If it's not in writing yet, then it's just another rumor being reported as fact by the paper with an agenda that trumps journalistic integrity every time.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Thank you. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Awww, you people are just nitpicking. Can't a newspaper make a buck anymore?

Isn't that what the media is all about today - making us feel good and the facts be damned.

Who needs tourism dude Cameron Davis and the Chamber's John ("I just want to be neutral") Stanton blowing their horns when we've got a newspaper that tells fairy tales in the name of growth.

There you go again, picking on our corporate-owned newspaper. Repeat after me, corporations are our friends, corporations are our friends, corporations are...

You guys owe former editor Tom Brossart an apology. Things are just the same under Aleshire, so it wasn't his fault.

Unless, of course, you expect an editor to stand up to his publisher in the name of journalistic integrity. Kind of like Katy Whitehouse and Jerry Thebado used to.

How do we start a grassroots movement to bring back the print version of the Rim Country Gazette?

Yeah, we're talking. But we would only do it if we were properly capitalized this time.

Unless we can run their butts right out of town and back to Kansas, it wouldn't make a lot of sense. This town isn't big enough for two newspapers, unless, of course, Kenny's mythical 4-year world-class college comes - but like we said back at the beginning, don't hold your breath on that one.
