Sky Harbor Terminal 4 lockdown lifted

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport authorities reopened part of Terminal 4 that had been evacuated Saturday morning due to an unattended item.

Julie Rodriguez, an airport spokeswoman, said the item was left in the D Gate section of Terminal 4.

“(Authorities) checked it out and cleared it,” she said. “It wasn’t a threat.”

Officials had diverted all flights inbound and outbound to the C Gates while the Transportation Security Administration investigated, but the lockdown, which lasted about an hour, had been lifted as of about 11:30 and people were being let back into the closed section.

Rodriguez said it’s not clear how many flights have been affected by the closure, but it was likely minimal because officials redirected incoming planes to the C Gates.

“Terminal 4 has seven concourses, so we have a lot of flexibility,” she said.

The Federal Aviation Administration referred inquires to airport officials and the TSA. The TSA did not immediately return inquiries.

An airport employee who did not want to give his names said the Southwest Airlines concourse had been evacuated and that there was a large police presence on the ground investigating.
