Payson Unified School District celebrated Arizona’s 100th birthday on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The Centennial event hosted teachers and Rim Country residents at PUSD’s District Office, the former Julia Randall School (otherwise known as the Rock Building) throughout the day.

Among the visitors were Sharon Denning and Kay Ellis (pictured) formerly the “Flack” sisters. Neither of the sisters had seen the old schoolhouse since its recent renovation/restoration, and were waxing nostalgic about their schooldays during their visit.

Having lived in Payson since their youth, the gals were full of Payson history, including the fact that their family’s own Flack Brothers Garage was the first ever business on the Beeline Highway. In addition, Ellis was among the 15 students who graduated from the new Payson High School in 1963. The 3-tiered sign which still sits at the entrance to the school on McLane Road was a gift of those graduates.

Visitors were encouraged to play AZ trivia, write down their thoughts on what Arizona will be like at its bicentennial, and list their favorite things about Arizona. Drawings for several Arizona related books were held, and cake and punch were served.

The event was organized and staged by PUSD employee Susan Campbell.
