A photographic slide presentation featuring Payson’s historic “Rock Building” and Julia Randall Elementary School will be shared with the public free of charge on Saturday, May 14, at 10:00 a.m. and again on Tuesday, May 17, at 7:00 p.m.
The get-togethers will take place in the Board and Community Meeting Room of the Rock Building, now the home of Payson Unified School District’s Administrative Offices located adjacent to Julia Randall Elementary School at 902 W. Main Street.
Three local citizens have partnered with Payson School District to preserve the history of the rock building: Ted Pettet, Payson’s first mayor and former teacher and coach at the Rock Building school; Glenn Smith, an artist specializing in photographic prints; and Gail Hearne, writer, speaker and educator. We have collected a number of historic photographs and would like to gather more from members of the community.
Join us to celebrate the history of the rock building that was built by local men with federal WPA funds during the Great Depression. The stone schoolhouse was open to educate Payson’s children for seven decades. The original oak wood floors of the hallway were beautifully restored during the 2009 remodel.
