Add Papa John's to boycott list

 GAZETTE
   EDITORIAL

We've talked about why caring, compassionate, intelligent people need to boycott Chick-Fil-A and Applebee's.  Unfortunately we have to add another eatery to the boycott list - Papa John's Pizza.

The chain made $44 million dollars in profit last year, and its CEO John Schnatter lives in a 45,000-square-foot mansion.  But he is threatening to not provide health care to his employees as required by Obamacare because it would cost the company between $5 and $8 million a year.
.
Do the math, folks.  That means Papa John's annual profit would be reduced to somewhere in the range of $36 to $39 million a year. Schnatter adds that otherwise he will have to charge customers 15 cents extra for a pizza.

Le'ts not belabor this.  First, I would gladly pay 15 cents extra for a Papa John's pizza if it means health insurance for its employees.

Second, what we have here is another case of what too many Republicans are all about.  They accuse those who voted Democratic of wanting more stuff.  I ask you quite sincerely, who wants more stuff?  Clearly it's people like Schnatter.

There's a big difference between wanting health care and wanting a 45,000-square-foot mansion.  Too many Republicans are simply selfish.  They want to hold onto their stuff no matter the consequences of their overindulgent lifestyles.

Third and finally, the only language these people understand is money.  Like I said, charge me 15 cents more per pizza and I will gladly pay.  But screw your employees so you can continue to lead an ostentatious lifestyle and I'm done buying your pizzas.  Finished.

I encourage compassionate people to join me in boycotting Papa John's Pizza.  And I encourage my right wing friends to tell me why I'm wrong.  Just click on the comment button below.

I agree. There are lots of places to buy pizza out there. Let's not encourage a multi-millionaire to screw the people who made him rich.

I agree. the poor employees of these companies are being used as hostages to avoid paying for health care. we used to order from papa johns. But yesterday ordered 9 pizzas from Dominoes, eventhough we had some coupons from papa Johns. don't want to add more square footage to shitnatter house

I agree. Schnatter has exposed his true lack of compassion and connection with common people. His first thought of action was to layoff workers not to thiink of a win-win solution. The wealthy people act as if the world is going to come to an end because they are so selfish.

All the stuff they have is part of the reason they have no connection with common people.

We are living in an era where the wealthy is going to slowly start loosing their wealth status because they keep putting their foot in their mouths along with their inhumane thought process is revealing their true character and turning people off. Their damaging their ownselves.

Why employees can't work and enjoy health benefits. Schnatter isn't forced into a corner to choose. He has both. Who wants to work for uncaring, selfish employees. Without healthy employees; you will not have a healthy and profitable business but they'll just use you to earn their profit--toss you aside and keep the replacement cycle going.

Employers don't like to hear "I can't" from their workers, so the same should apply to you. There are no problems--only solutions.

The lack of true employee appreciation has created such a cold work environments.

I encourage everyone--to dream and put your dream into action. You can be successful and love what you do and do what you love. We were all born winners---you just have to believe it for yourself.

Papa Johns is a publicly traded company, not everyone invested in the company makes 6 7 or 8 figure salaries. I am sure some retirement funds are in that company so we should forsake their funds and their future? Publicly traded companies are expected to make as much profit as possible. Its not ok to deny health insurance but Papa Johns is planning on cutting hours to keep its investors happy.

Where does this all end?? If every supposedly "greedy" business is forced to close their doors because everyone boycotted their services, where will all the people employed by them go??? How does that help the situation??? Give me one good thing that will come of this type of mentality.

Doesn't make since to me. Sounds like socialism at work again, torn from the pages of the UAW.

Really bright suggestion, who do you hurt the owner who is already rich or the employees who lose their jobs because of reduced sales?

Yes, but - now read and let me hear your views.

As you now really see, our vote is our only tool to take down these greedy self-indulgent megalomaniacs - no more Papa John Pizza for my family, but I want to go further. Why don't we go a step further to mitigate the loss these poor employees will suffer anyway. I suggest that anyone who wants to boycott Papa John could also be part of a big picture thinking. I was thinking how we can model compassion in business. Can we set up a Cooperative to which we contribute to set up a pizzeria chain for the current employees of Papa John to run and us as investors provide insurance for the workers, buy American products and promote local suppliers and then in the long term contribute to the election of local elections to put in place elected officers with compassion and common sense to support the bigger democratic agenda. Let's think big and use our intelligence to outwit greed.

Lol its hilarious how compassionate people are when it comes to other peoples money.

I'm sure Papa Johns will survive without your business.

Well said Jim. More editorials!

Good thinking genius. If you boycott Papa John’s people will buy less pizza and the company will have to reduce its staff because they have fewer customers. So you screw the people you claim to be compassionate about, brilliant.

I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BOYCOTT YOU AND YOUR WEBSITE----WHO ARE YOU GOD? WHAT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO SAY SOMEONE CAN'T BE OVER-INDULGENT OR HAS TOO MUCH? WHO MADE YOU GOD? WHY DO YOU GET TO DECIDE WHAT "TOO MUCH IS" TAKING SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO SOMEONE ELSE, EVEN RICHES IS STILL STEALING, AND YOU CAN NEVER JUSTIFY THAT BY SAYING "THEY HAVE TO MUCH"

New cost analysis on huff post biz says $0.034 cents per pie. Greed pure and simple by and for John Scnatter.

Someone has different opinions then me, I MUST boycott their business! Because fuck freedom of speech unless it's coming from liberals like ME. Boycotting and costing innocent employees their jobs is democratic and neat! Look how progressive I am! I'm doing this for all those dead slaves and all those babies who never had the chance to be aborted.

Lost my business, and I bought pizzas from them once a week a least! What a pathetic loser.

Here's the problem with boycotting a business. The first people to feel the pinch are the employees-not the owners. Specifically the employees who depend on the generosity of the customer to make a living in the form of gratuities. Thanks boycotters-how can I buy diapers and groceries for my son without income? I should have brought home $30 in tips tonight. Instead, I came home with $4. Awesome. You're really made your point. Thanks.

They're off my family's list of places to get pizza from! It's embarrassing that a guy who lives in a 44,000 s.f. house with a multiple-car garage is whining about spending $4 t $8 million/year for employee health insurance. So charge the extra 15 cents/pizza. Big deal--people would pay it. This is just a tantrum like many other wealthy business owners are having. What they want is for the government to continue to take care of their employees' healthcare costs--because not only don't they want to help pay for it, they don't want to pay their workers enough to buy their own private insurance. They'd rather have the rest of the taxpayers on the hook for it. Because that's what happens: Workers whose employers don't provide health insurance, or do so at unaffordable costs, and don't pay wages high enough to cover the cost of private insurance, end up on Medicaid or other government-assistance programs.

I support Poppa Johns, they are a business that like any other business is trying to make a profit. All Obama care is going to do is cost these businesses more money. The people can thanks Obama Care for being screwed not Poppa Johns.

Let's post everyday about this until Mr. Schnatter publically denounces his current stand on health care. POST EVERYDAY.

I applaud Papa John's pizza for this! We need to take a stand against Obamacare - it's a complete farce - nothing is FREE to the American people from the Government. You folks need to wake up and see what is really at stake and not begrudge someone for working hard and making money at it. You don't seem to have a problem with Hollywood making more money and living in their big mansions!
