[Gazette Blog Editor's note: the following is a response to the commentary below by Bob Edwards.]
I once championed Mr. Edwards as a man who brought about the beginnings
of a progressive city government in the town of Payson. I hardly
recognize this writer as the same man. Mr. Edwards, like far too many
people strongly influenced by extreme views of the Tea Party and
desperate Republicans, falls under a spell which distorts reality.
This
country has come perilously close to complete economic implosion. The
circumstances inherited by this president were, and to some extent still
are, more dire than at any time in our history. The indisputable fact
that total disaster has been avoided and, by all economic indicators,
improvement is evident, is easily brushed aside by the "What have you
done for me lately?" ingrates. It is as if a person has been pulled from
a terrible accident and, through skilled medical treatment, has finally
been dismisssed from hospital. However, the family accosts the doctor
with, "Sure, but he still limps!"
Mr. Edwards paints with a very
broad black brush, and he seems to assume that his painting is
conclusive. Strong evidence exists to the contrary if he were capable of
looking at history through the eyes of an historian instead of a
shallow shill for an anti-establishment revolt.
As for Libya, not
even Mitt Romney has made the dispicable accusations which so easily
drip from too many "experts" lips. The event was catastropic, we can
all agree. However, it is under investigation by the FBI and other
agencies including a "Bi-Partisan" congressional committee. (whatever
that is.)
Not even old shoot-from- the-hip John McCain has said the
president intentionally lied. It may well be shown that state department
incompetence at some level was at fault. To suggest that he knows "the
truth" only reveals Mr.Edwards personal destructive arrogance which I
can only assume has recently been acquired. Remarks such as this are too
easily thrown about by groups bent upon overturning the government by
whatever means at hand. It now appears that a man I once championed has
somehow fallen under that poisoned influence.
What ever happened to the man I once lionized?

"So there’s a big picture to be examined here. But we don’t have all of the pieces, and I think it’s easy to try and jump to conclusions about what might have happened here. It’s probably better to let the relevant bodies do their work"
Noble, I couldn't agree more. A piece full of disappointing arguments, but I am surprised you didn't ask Mr. Edwards what he meant by "sadly, his strong racially motivated actions has destroyed that hope." Please explain yourself, Bob! That remark alone reeks of racism. I am ashamed of you.
