On Monday afternoon, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a speech
in which he urged his fellow Republicans to support the bipartisan
border security bill. In that speech, McConnell insisted that “this is a
humanitarian and security crisis of historic proportions.” He explained
that three months earlier he had deputized Sen. James Lankford to lead
efforts to address this crisis and praised the resulting bill, which
provides both border security and military assistance to American
allies.
Three hours later, behind closed doors, McConnell urged Republicans to vote against the legislation. According to Punchbowl News,
McConnell insisted that the problem wasn’t in the bill that Lankford
negotiated, it was that the “political mood in the country has changed.”
Meaning that despite working months to get exactly what they demanded, they’re going to throw it away. For Donald Trump.
Since Republicans took control of the House following the 2022 midterm elections, they’ve insisted that any military assistance to Ukraine be paired with a border security bill. They laid out a sweeping set of demands,
including making it tougher to meet the requirements for an initial
asylum assessment and turning more people back at the border. They’ve
fearmongered about “military-age males” crossing the border.
That’s what’s in the bill. It’s exactly what’s
in the bill: Turning back single men. Toughening the entry
requirements. Reducing the processing of asylum seekers from years to
under six months. It’s all in there.
Now Republicans are sending it back.
How utterly feckless is their position? This fecking much.
Following the Republican meeting on Monday night, Lankford refused to
say that he would support the bill he negotiated. The same bill he’s
been loudly defending for weeks. Here’s Lankford just 24 hours ago.
The key aspect of this, again, is are we, as Republicans,
going to have press conferences and complain the border’s bad and then
intentionally leave it open after the worst month in American history in
December?
Now we know the answer. Yes. Yes, that’s exactly what they’re going to do. In fact, they’re going to do more than
that. Republicans are going to come out on Tuesday, shut down the
border bill that they negotiated and which gives them exactly what they
claimed they wanted, and at the same time they’re going to vote to impeach
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for failing to be
tougher on the border. The level of hypocrisy should be toxic, but
Republicans in Congress are protected by a superpower: a complete lack
of morality.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, Ukrainian troops
are being forced to withdraw from a city they have defended for months
because they are simply out of ammunition to hold back the Russians. And we won’t meet their desperate need.
Republicans’ price for allowing America to assist Ukraine with a
tiny fraction of our military hardware was supposed to be getting tough
on the border, even if that meant that thousands of people who
desperately need to escape oppression and threats of violence are turned
away from the United States. Then they got that deal and turned it
down, which only reinforces the idea that you should never bargain with terrorists.
Why would anyone ever seek to negotiate with Senate Republicans, on any topic, ever again?
At least when someone is venal, they expect a payoff. These
Republicans aren’t even that. They’re sub-venal. Spineless. Gutless.
Cowed. They’re the party of chickenshit. And they have blood on their
hands.
Right now, around the world, America’s allies are seeing that
we are fundamentally unreliable in a crisis. Right now, America’s
enemies are breathing out a sigh of infinite relief. And in Ukraine, and
Taiwan, and in both Israel and Gaza, they’re
realizing that the United States—the United States that has been there
for a century—has exited, stage right.
These guys aren’t just pleasing Trump. They’re setting the world ablaze. And they don’t even know why.

For months, congressional Republicans have insisted
that they won’t allow aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan to pass unless
they also get big concessions on immigration. That was a purely
political demand, egged on by Donald Trump, allowing them to change the
subject to the border.
Now that that demand is close to being met with a bipartisan deal in the Senate, Republicans have changed their tune, blatantly trying to keep this election-year issue alive.
That’s made them look bad and left the critical aid package stranded,
and now Republican leadership is reversing course and talking about
splitting the two issues apart.
“It’s time for us to move something, hopefully including the border agreement,” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell told reporters, “but we need to get help to Israel and Ukraine quickly.”
Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a close ally of McConnell, agreed.
“It would be nice to change the status quo on the border, but if there
is not the political support to do that, then I think we should proceed
with the rest of the supplemental,” he said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson appears to agree as well. He’s been in close contact with Trump on the issue and is adamantly opposed to bringing the Senate’s border bill to the floor, if the Senate passes it. But in a meeting with Baltic leaders this week, he signaled that he’s open to the separate Ukraine aid bill.
Speaking with reporters
after the meeting, Lauri Hussar, the speaker of Estonia’s parliament,
said Johnson expressed “his readiness” to deliver Ukraine aid, with
Johnson saying there “should be a way to find a solution to the
problems” and “domestic issues” in the way.
“Yesterday we had the opportunity to meet with various
congressman, with committee leaders, and of course opinions are
different, we heard different views, but overall we are pleased to say
there’s broad support for Ukraine,” Daiga Mieriņa, the speaker of
Latvia’s parliament, added. “Speaker Johnson also affirmed this close
partnership [with the Baltics] and that this close partnership would
continue going forward.”
Johnson does, however, face a political problem—namely, MAGA Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s threat
to try to oust him over Ukraine aid. “I just told him [Johnson] it’s an
absolute no-go,” Greene said. “If he funds $60 billion to fund a war in
Ukraine to continue killing a whole generation of Ukrainian men—to
continue a war that is a losing war, that [Ukrainian President
Volodymyr] Zelensky’s ready for peace talks—yeah, I would introduce the
motion to vacate myself.”
Johnson brushed off the threat, saying he was “not worried” about being ousted, but the Freedom Caucus is restless and enraged at Johnson over the fact that he keeps working with the Senate and White House to keep the government functioning.
There’s a way around that opposition, if Johnson is willing to let his GOP colleagues take it. House Democrats have a discharge petition that’s left over from last spring’s debt ceiling fight.
Basically, it’s a shell bill into which text can be inserted, and it
has priority consideration on the House floor if it gets enough
signatures to pass. Democrats have that legislative text
ready to go. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Florida Democrat, has already
filed that supplemental aid bill, and it would take only a handful of
Republicans signing on for the bill to be forced to the floor.

By now, anyone tuning into a
House Oversight Committee or House Judiciary Committee hearing knows
what to expect. With frequent slams of the gavel by their respective
chairs, Republicans plod through repetitive attacks on President Joe
Biden or waggle their fingers about some salacious claim including the
phrase “Hunter Biden’s laptop.” Democrats try to object and occasionally
insert a fact. But the next Republican is at the mic five minutes
later, once again hammering the same lies.
At least that’s how it used to be. But anyone who has tuned in recently may have noticed a big change.
Democrats aren’t just tearing Republican arguments apart:
They’re derailing hearings and getting their opponents genuinely
flustered. The recent hearing
in which Republicans intended to charge Hunter Biden with contempt for
declining to testify behind closed doors is a good example. Not only did
Hunter make a brief personal appearance and offer to testify right then
and there in public, but Democrats were able to consistently throw
Republicans off their game, blow away false evidence, expose their
hypocrisy, and even hammer Donald Trump.
If all that seemed like it took a lot of behind-the-scenes planning, it did. But it won’t be the last time. Because as The Daily Beast reports, Democrats have a plan to make these hearings just as silly as the claims Republicans are making about Biden.
As soon as they gained control of the House in 2023,
Republicans launched a series of supposed investigations into President
Biden. And his children. And his brother. And anyone else they can lump
in to the “Biden Family Investigation.”
For months, Rep. James Comer, who is heading up investigations
in the House Oversight Committee, and Rep. Jim Jordan, who has the same
role for the House Judiciary Committee, have been releasing false claims and mischaracterizing innocuous issues like a father loaning his son money for a car payment. But Republicans didn’t let having zero evidence stop them from announcing an impeachment inquiry in December.
The investigations have a clear goal: to reduce Biden’s chances
of reelection and to signal to Trump that they’re trying to get revenge
for his two impeachments. Republicans likely feel like these endless
investigations worked well for them before the 2016 elections, when they
spent two full years hectoring former Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton about Benghazi.
But this time around, the whole thing, whether it’s Republicans badgering an art dealer who sold some of Hunter’s paintings, a disappearing informant, or flashing revenge porn
on the floor of the House, has been ridiculous from start to finish.
The House GOP has been on a year-long fishing expedition featuring a
level of obsession that would embarrass Captain Ahab, and they haven’t
even found a minnow.
As Republicans ramped up the Biden attacks, Democrats responded. Rep. Jamie Raskin put together a “Truth Squad”
that includes Reps. Greg Casar, Jasmine Crockett, Maxwell Frost, Daniel
Goldman, and Jared Moskowitz. If some of those names sound familiar,
it’s because they’ve been front and center in disrupting Republican
plans.
It was Crockett who forcefully kicked off a confrontation
with Rep. Nancy Mace who, on a committee where every Republican member
is white, accused Hunter Biden and Democrats of engaging in “white
privilege.” Crockett forced Mace to try and defend her indefensible
remarks, and then Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed the gate closed
by pointing out how Mace voted to eliminate the House Subcommittee on
Civil Rights.
As The Daily Beast article highlights, Moskowitz was on hand
with a poster showing a chummy photo of Trump and sex trafficker Jeffrey
Epstein when it seemed that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was going to
once again show nude pictures of Hunter Biden. “You come up here and
talk about Hunter Biden’s behavior and you’re so disgusted,” said
Moskowitz, “but the guy that you all kneel to associates himself with a
pedophile.”
Those quick responses, along with Hunter Biden staring down Republicans
from the visitor section, became the most viral moments from the
hearing. Put together with sharp responses from other Democrats who
refused to play Comer’s game, Republicans were left looking like this:
The best thing to come from all this is that Raskin and the Democrats
have been joined by a new set of critics attacking Comer and his
pointless investigation. As Kerry Eleveld reported earlier, Republicans are none too happy that this absurd “investigation” has gone on so long and come up so dry.
“James Comer continues to embarrass himself and House
Republicans. He screws up over and over and over," said a source
identified as "close" to House GOP leadership, who appeared to be
playing CYA for the leadership team. The source's big fear was that
Comer would ultimately fail to provide the foundation necessary (i.e.
evidence) to follow through with impeaching Biden.
These anonymous Republicans don’t seem to be seriously
considering that maybe Comer is failing not because he’s incompetent (or
at least, not only because he’s incompetent) but
because Joe Biden did nothing wrong. But then, they are Republicans.
They’re used to having leaders whose closets are jam-packed with
skeletons.
Republicans are trying to repeat their perceived success with
Benghazi, but this time Democrats know the game and they have a plan to
disrupt it. That plan isn’t necessarily convincing Republicans that
Biden did nothing wrong, but it sure is making these hearings more fun
to watch.

In a truly telling admission that Donald Trump's campaign operatives have no control over their candidate, top adviser Susie Wiles told Republican megadonors at a private event Tuesday not to take his rage-filled invectives seriously.
In any normal campaign with a remotely normal candidate, top
campaign aides would just tell their candidate to put a sock in their
incendiary rhetoric. They could warn, "You're killing us with rich
donors!" And that would be the end of it.
But it's becoming clear that Trump is too far gone for that
fix. They got one sedated speech out of him after his Iowa victory and
now it's Katy, bar the door! Trump appears even more erratic now than he
did in 2020, and his campaign chiefs obviously don't stand a chance of
moderating him, much less controlling him. As NBC Newswrites of the ritzy Palm Beach event at the Four Seasons (hotel, not Total Landscaping):
Wiles conceded to the donors that Trump is going to say
things people don’t like. But she countered that he is poised to lock
down his party’s nomination and that he is the GOP’s best hope to defeat
President Joe Biden, according to a person familiar with her remarks.
In other words: Write checks if you want access, folks. Sure,
Trump's a lunatic, but he's gonna win and you'll want to be able to get
his ear.
Wiles' appeal came several days after Trump outright threatened Nikki Haley donors
with being "permanently barred from the MAGA camp." (No presidential
inaugural ball for you!) Some Haley donors were reportedly in attendance
at the event.
And while it's true that Trump will most likely secure the Republican nomination,recent polling is very mixed on whether he's the better general election candidate to face off against President Joe Biden.
The most recentQuinnipiac University poll(Jan.
25 - 29) showed Haley besting Biden by 5 points in a head-to-head
matchup, 47% - 42%, while Trump loses to Biden by 6 points, 44% - 50%.
It's just one survey but by and large, the polling is all over the map,
particularly when third-party variables are thrown in.
What is perhaps most confounding, however, is a campaign chief
exclusively trying to sell a bunch of well-heeled donors on the idea of
simply ignoring whatever Trump burps out of his mouth. How exactly does
the campaign expect to convey that message to average
voters—particularlythe critical swing voters who are already registering their disdain for Trump at the ballot box?
In the view of some political observers (Haley included), Trump
truly has lost a step since 2020, not to mention 2016. In fact, it’s
the subject of a new Biden campaign ad called “Confused”posted on Truth Social this week.
So the key question the Trump camp will need to address is: How
does a campaign woo swing voters with a candidate whose top campaign
aides are already apologizing for his behavior on the trail? Because
Trump’s handlers are already failing at muzzling him.
The Donald is totally out of control, and he's getting worse by the day.
Fox News hosts have been engaged in pushing out some pretty special conspiracy theories. The newest is that the Super Bowl somehow has been rigged
so that pop megastar Taylor Swift, who is dating Kansas City
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, will have a platform to endorse President
Joe Biden’s reelection campaign.
Fox host Jesse Waters
even went so far as to suggest that the Pentagon’s “psychological
operations unit” has turned Swift into “an asset.” He said Swift could
be “a front for a covert political agenda.” The
Pentagon dismissed the accusation with a Swiftian song reference: “As
for this conspiracy theory, we are going to shake it off.”
But there was at least one unexpected voice of reason in the Murdoch media empire: Fox Sports pundit Colin Cowherd, who
on his show “The Herd” blasted those people who have a problem with
Swift appearing on NFL broadcasts when she attends a game. He cited a New York Times
report that found that Swift appeared on camera for only 32 seconds
during the 3.5-hour broadcast of Sunday’s Ravens-Chiefs AFC Championship
game—17 seconds of which were devoted to an in-house promo for the
network’s upcoming broadcast of Sunday’s Grammy Awards.
“There’s a lot of really weird,
lonely, insecure men out there,” Cowherd said. “The fact that a pop
star—the world’s biggest pop star—is dating a star tight end who had one
of his greatest games ever, and the network puts them on the air
briefly, then it bothers you, what does that say about your life?”
He then pointed out all the male
celebrities whose presence at past sporting events has been
celebrated such as Drake, Spike Lee, and Jack Nicholson. “But a talented
and beautiful woman is on the air—one who would never pay attention to
lonely men—and it bothers them.”
He added that there are a lot of men
out there who have never had “real intimacy with a woman” and they …
“are often misogynistic and resent women who didn’t give them the time
they think they deserve.”
It’s all quite ironic because some of these same weird, angry,
insecure men back in 2016 were idolizing Swift as an “Aryan goddess.” In
May 2016, Vice wrote:
Nazis and members of the "alt
right"—an Internet subculture that is best described as the venn diagram
of hipster culture and white supremacy—have been spreading a conspiracy
theory that Swift is a covert Nazi. They claim Swift's songs "red pilled" America into believing a conservative, racist agenda. …
"Firstly, Taylor Swift is a pure Aryan
goddess, like something out of classical Greek poetry. Athena reborn.
That's the most important thing," explains Andre Anglin, the writer of
the white supremacist blog the Daily Stormer.
"It is also an established fact that Taylor Swift is secretly a Nazi
and is simply waiting for the time when Donald Trump makes it safe for
her to come out and announce her Aryan agenda to the world. Probably,
she will be betrothed to Trump's son, and they will be crowned American
royalty." …
Now all of this was nothing more than these neo-Nazi fanboys
projecting their white supremacist views onto Swift’s image. Swift, of
course, had absolutely nothing to do with any white supremacist groups.The 19-year-old Swift revealed in a 2009 Rolling Stone interview
that she supported President Barack Obama, saying, “I’ve never seen
this country so happy about a political decision in my entire time of
being alive. I’m so glad this was my first election.”
Vice said Swift’s lawyer, J. Douglas Baldridge, did send a
threatening letter to Pinterest after one teenage girl posted memes
attributing Adolf Hitler quotes to Swift to spoof memes that falsely attributed inspiring quotes to Marilyn Monroe. Baldridge wrote:
The association of Ms. Swift with
Adolf Hitler undisputedly is 'harmful,' 'abusive,' 'ethnically
offensive,' 'humiliating to other people,' 'libelous,' and no doubt
'otherwise objectionable.' It is of no import that Ms. Swift may be a
public figure or that Pinterest conveniently now argues that the
Offending Material is mere satire or parody. Public figures have rights.
And, there are certain historical figures, such as Adolf Hitler,
Charles Manson and the like, who are universally identified in the case
law and popular culture as lightning rods for emotional and negative
reaction.
At the time, Swift kept her political views to herself. In a 2012 interview, she told Time, “I don’t talk about politics because it might influence other people. And
I don’t think that I know enough yet in life to be telling people who
to vote for.” She did not make any endorsement in the 2016 presidential
election.
In August 2017, The Daily Beast
wrote immediately after the violent white supremacist rally in
Charlottesville, Virginia, that the time had come for Swift to “denounce
her neo-Nazi admirers” who have “claimed her as one of their own.” The
story concluded: “Say it after me, TayTay: ‘I, Taylor Swift, denounce
Nazis. And I am not attracted to Eric Trump.’”
But then in October 2018, Swift obviously felt she knew enough to tell people who to vote for when she endorsed a candidate for the first time: Democrat Phil Bredesen, who was running against Republican Marsha Blackburn for Senate in Tennessee.
"As much as I have in the past and would like to continue
voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn," Swift
wrote on Instagram, adding that "her voting record in Congress appalls
and terrifies me."
And in the Netflix documentary “Miss Americana,” there is a
revealing scene in which Swift is shown discussing her decision to
endorse Bredesen with her parents. Her father advises her that that she
might lose a lot of fans. That’s what happened to country superstars The
Chicks, then known as the Dixie Chicks, when in 2003 lead singer Natalie Maines
at a London concert said she was “ashamed” to be from the same state as
President George W. Bush on the eve of the Iraq War. And Swift’s mother
said she was really worried about her daughter’s safety if she
made such an endorsement.
But Swift said she felt “sad” that she didn’t speak out during
the 2016 election, and told her parents that this time, “I need to be on
the right side of history.”
“It really is a big deal for me. She (Blackburn) votes against fair
pay for women, she votes against reauthorization of the violence against
women act which is just basically protecting us from domestic abuse,
and stalking, stalking. She thinks that if you’re a gay couple or even
if you look like a gay couple you should be allowed to be kicked out of a
restaurant.
“Its really basic human rights … And I can’t see another commercial
and see her disguising these policies behind the words `Tennessee
Christian values.’ Those aren’t Tennessee Christian values. I live in
Tennessee. I am Christian. That’s not what we stand for. I need to do
this. Dad, I need you to forgive me for doing it because I’m doing it.”
Then in a September 2019 Rolling Stone interview, Swift denounced white supremacists in no uncertain terms. She said:
“There’s literally nothing worse than
white supremacy. It’s repulsive. There should be no place for it.
Really, I keep trying to learn as much as I can about politics, and it’s
become something I’m now obsessed with, whereas before, I was living in
this sort of political ambivalence, because the person I voted for had
always won. We were in such an amazing time when Obama was president
because foreign nations respected us. We were so excited to have this
dignified person in the White House. My first election was voting for
him when he made it into office, and then voting to re-elect him. I
think a lot of people are like me, where they just didn’t really know
that this could happen. But I’m just focused on the 2020 election. I’m
really focused on it. I’m really focused on how I can help and not
hinder.”
In October 2020, Swift endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. She spoke toV Magazine for their Thought Leaders Issue and said:
“The change we need most is to elect a president who recognizes that
people of color deserve to feel safe and represented, that women deserve
the right to choose what happens to their bodies, and that the LGBTQIA+
community deserves to be acknowledged and included. Everyone deserves a
government that takes global health risks seriously and puts the lives
of its people first. The only way we can begin to make things better is
to choose leaders who are willing to face these issues and find ways to
work through them.
“I will proudly vote for Joe Biden and
Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election. Under their
leadership, I believe America has a chance to start the healing process
it so desperately needs.”
And now the woman who was once the alt-right’s “Aryan goddess” is
viewed by some of the same people as being under Satan’s influence as
the conspiracy theories spread that the Super Bowl has been rigged so
Swift can have a big stage to endorse Biden. Kandiss Taylor, an
ultra-right Georgia Republican politician, wrote on X:
As a former “Aryan goddess,” you can’t fall much farther than into the arms of a Pfizer vaccine spokesman.

Donald Trump's success in
delaying his trials has garnered lots of attention. Criminal proceedings
in the Jan. 6 election subversion case—arguably the biggest threat
Trump faces before Election Day—remain inan indefinite holding pattern
while the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and likely the Supreme Court,
weigh Trump's claim to have presidential immunity from criminal
prosecution.
Pundits and analysts have approached the notion that voters
might ultimately cast their ballots in the November election without
knowing the outcome in any ofTrump's 91 criminal indictments with an air of trepidation.
Reality-based voters believe that if Trump is reelected, he
will abuse his power to quash his legal liabilities. And in that sense,
justice delayed would truly be justice denied.
But in terms of electoral outcomes this November, the
conventional wisdom holds that Trump facing trial ahead of Election Day
would redound to the benefit of President Joe Biden.
As ABC News' Jonathan Karl pointed out on this week's”Hacks on Tap” podcast, the parade of horribles about Trump's behavior on Jan. 6 would allcome to light via testimony from Trump insiders such as his former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and his deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino.
"It's a devastating portrait of Donald Trump," said Karl, who hasreported extensively
on the evidence against Trump. "When these guys are forced to speak
under oath, and they talk about Trump's behavior after the election, in
November of 2020, and the days leading up to Jan. 6 and on Jan. 6
itself, as the Capitol is under attack ... it is devastating."
But truth be told, nothing guarantees a Trump conviction would actually play better for Biden and worse for Trump.
Conventional wisdom also held that 91 criminal indictments would weigh Trump down in the Republican primary. Instead, Trump'slegal morass has benefitted him
as he cultivated a sense of victimhood and grievance among his
supporters. Indeed, instead of Trump stumbling in the primary, he now
looks to be a lock for the GOP nomination short of some exogenous event.
The general election isn't the primary, of course, and polling
has suggested Trump could suffer from a pre-Election Day conviction. In
Iowa, for instance, exit polls showed that 31% of Republican voters
would view Trump asunfit for office if he were convicted of a crime.
The bottom line is, with Trump, there's no sure thing, and
there's simply no guarantee that a conviction would work to Biden's
favor in November. Trump might actually manage to turn such a conviction
into an existential rallying cry for his most avid supporters while
anti-Trumpers feel satisfied that Trump is finally being held to
account. In other words, perhaps his voters get even more engaged while
anti-Trumpers take their foot off the gas a bit.
But let's flip the equation: What if Trump successfully delays
all his comeuppance until after the election? No trials start and the
judicial system is simply on hold until the dust settles from the
election.
In that case, anti-Trumpers would likely be livid at the
thought of Trump successfully gaming the legal system once again and
potentially avoiding being held to account indefinitely.
Democrats' message could be something along the lines of:

It's exactly the type of scenario that could inspire a critical
mass of voters to climb over broken glass to get to the polls and
ensure Trump faces trial. Without poll-testing such a message, it's hard
to get a sense of the impact. But the idea of Trump mounting a violent
attack on the U.S. seat of government with the intent of stealing the
2020 election and never actually going to trial over it is infuriating
on the basest of levels.
Look, no one can predict the future. This is only to say that
as the nation watches the gears of justice grind ever so slowly in
advance of Nov. 5, there's no reason to panic from an electoral
standpoint.
Testimony from Trump allies in the Jan. 6 trial could
ultimately prove "devastating" to his reelection bid, as Karl implied,
but there's no silver bullet here. It's also possible that Trump
managing to stall justice until after the election would absolutely
enrage anti-Trump voters along with anyone who believes that no one—not
even a former president—is above the law.
Voters will ultimately hold Trump's fate and that of our
country in their hands. And a powerful and inspiring argument against
Trump ever seeing the inside of the White House again can be made either
way.
