Oath Keepers Prepared for Bloody Battle at White House to Keep Trump in Office

The first guilty plea in the seditious conspiracy case against top Oath Keepers includes chilling new details about how far the militia was prepared to go to block a Biden presidency

A member of the Oath Keepers militia who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, has pleaded guilty to seditious conspiracy, admitting to charges he and others attempted to block the peaceful transfer of power by force. Joshua James, a 34-year-old veteran from Alabama, is the first member of the conspiracy to plead guilty, and the “statement of offense” he signed, admitting to his criminal conduct, includes chilling new details about the plot — including that the Oath Keepers were on standby to use “lethal force” at the White House.

The Oath Keepers are led by Stewart Rhodes, whom the government has charged was the ringleader of the conspiracy to keep Trump in office. Rhodes has been ordered detained until trial, and has pleaded not guilty. In court documents, the militia leader has defended his conduct — including stockpiling caches of weapons across the river in Virginia — as preparation for the contingency that Donald Trump invoked the Insurrection Act and called on militias to come to his aid.

The 15-page statement of facts that James signed in relation to his crime alleges that the Oath Keepers were told to prepare for bloodshed at the White House. “In the weeks leading up to January 6, 2021,” the document reads, “Rhodes instructed James and other co-conspirators to be prepared, if called upon, to report to the White House grounds to secure the perimeter and use lethal force if necessary against anyone who tried to remove President Trump from the White House, including the National Guard or other government actors who might be sent to remove President Trump as a result of the Presidential Election.”

In addition, James stipulated to his own conduct, including assaulting a Capitol Police officer inside the halls of Congress while yelling: “Get out of my Capitol! Get out! Get out of my Capitol!” The document states: “James entered the Capitol in part to hinder or delay the certification of President-Elect Joseph R. Biden as President of the United States.”

The guilty plea creates new legal challenges for Rhodes, whose name appears 58 times in the factual summary of James’ crime. It undercuts arguments that he disapproved of the conduct of his militia members. The document asserts that after the Oath Keepers left the Capitol and convened with Rhodes on the grounds outside, “Rhodes told James he was glad James and others had gone inside the Capitol.”

Rhodes’ lawyers have asserted that the militia leader had a clean conscience after the events of Jan. 6, and enjoyed a relaxed meal with his companions at Olive Garden. But the factual stipulation of the guilty plea paints that dinner meeting in a starkly different light.

“While at the restaurant,” it reads, “Rhodes and James came to believe that law enforcement was searching for Rhodes and others after their attack on the Capitol.” It describes the group returning to their hotel, grabbing their bags, and then meeting at a gas station. “There, James saw what he estimated to be thousands of dollars’ worth of firearms, ammunition, and related equipment in Rhodes’s vehicle,” the document states. “Rhodes divvied up various firearms and other gear among James and others who occupied a total of three cars. Rhodes left his mobile phone with one person and departed with another person in that person’s car so that law enforcement could not locate and arrest him.”

The stipulation of facts also describes group text messages that James received “from an individual he understood to be an attorney for the Oath Keepers.” The messages advised Rhodes … Co. to cover their tracks. One message read: “STEWART: YOU ALL NEED TO DELETE ANY OF YOUR COMMENTS REGARDING WHO DID WHAT… You/we have not yet gotten a preservation order instructing us to retain those chat comments. So DELETE THEM.” It added: “GET BUSY. DELETE your self-incriminating comments or those that can incriminate others. Start now….”

James, in addition to confessing to the seditious conspiracy charge, has also pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding. Both offenses carry terms up to 20 years in prison. James has become a cooperating witness in the government’s case against the remaining alleged co-conspirators.

The Oath Keepers were prepared to report to the White House grounds to secure the perimeter and use lethal force if necessary against anyone who tried to remove President Trump from the White House, including the National Guard or other government actors who might be sent to remove President Trump as a result of the Presidential Election.”

An old tweet from unfrozen Confederate general, Sen. Ted Cruz, has been making the Twitter rounds anew of late. It's part of the long list of complaints that Republican culture warriors have with the American military compared to the not-woke, patriotically white Russian army, and is a general reminder that the party is addicted to notions of ultra-masculinity that are now allegedly endangered by the presence of anything but ultra-masculinity. C'mon, let's bask.

You might remember that when it happened, or you might not, but the specific video Ted retweeted appears to have been taken down due to, I don’t know, somebody’s mom coming home. Ted was horrified by a (far-right produced) video comparison of a Russian army recruiting video to a U.S. version that featured “wokeness.”

That Cruz happened to be parroting attacks from "channels that promote fascist and antisemitic beliefs" seems almost quaint. As we've seen, the path from extremist far-right groups to Republican House and Senate ears is a short one, even without Fox News' help. There's no fascist paranoia that won't find purchase in Republican lawmakers’ heads, whether it be the danger of too-tolerant books for LGBT teens, or the idea that wearing a mask during an active pandemic that’s killed a million Americans is a "Marxist" request intended to sap our nation's essence.

But the reason Cruz's tweet from a half-year ago is picking up new steam now is because, as it turns out, the Russian army that Sen. Ted Cruz was praising for lack of “wokeness” has been getting its ass handed to it by one of the "wokest" militaries on Earth. There are 32,000 women in Ukraine’s armed forces, accounting for about 15% of the total, but those numbers are now exploding as Ukraine hands out rifles to civilians and Ukrainians rush to volunteer for Ukraine's defense.

Russia may have been able to produce a video that rubs Ted Cruz's manly feelings in just the right way, but the actual force the supposedly hyper-masculine Vladimir Putin and his gloriously un-woke generals have assembled are struggling to even get enough fuel to the battlefront to keep their trucks running. And their force, heavily reliant on short-term conscriptions to fill the ranks, has been filing through the country in formations that have baffled outside military observers as, well, blazingly incompetent.

How are all you Putin-praisers feeling about that, as you glad-hand with all the other CPAC culture warriors? It turns out that the images of toxic (and frankly ridiculous) masculinity that you want all the rest of human culture to revolve around have produced a Russian army that literally has to pester Ukrainian civilians for directions to the places they're supposed to capture.

Hey, maybe showing womenfolk in Army recruiting ads is not, in fact, going to be the downfall of American military competitiveness. And if that's not true, what does it mean for all the new claims that letting students have access to library books that might upset them is the next thing dooming our civilization?

Just thinking out loud, but it is possible that Ted Cruz and all the other performative culture warriors are incompetent assholes who are so focused on their own feels that they can be duped by pretty much any staged propaganda that comes along that makes them feel good.

Uncomfortably for Putin, there is now no obvious path for the Russian military to meet their objectives in Ukraine. They can level the country, but they likely can't "win" it. Possibly of even greater importance, however, is that the Russian military has performed so poorly that it's causing international observers to recalculate their estimations of just how dangerous that military really is. As Putin's paranoia about NATO motives grows, NATO itself has been shown a display of Russian military weakness—the very last thing Putin could afford.

Protofascist and fascist Republicans flocked to Donald Trump for his belligerence, boorishness, and a supposed toughness that would rival the Putin that so much of Ted Cruz's party has been celebrating as a "genius." But it turns out that Putin may be closer to Donald Trump than Donald Trump was to the Putin of the right's dreams.

Putin is a murderous strongman, to be sure. But he's also a self-promoting, propaganda-reliant, law-ignoring, cash-hoarding wealth-obsessed liar who appears to have blustered his way into a no-win situation due to a complete unwillingness to even tolerate the presence of anyone who might disagree with him.

He's not a vigorous specimen of nationalist manhood. He's a Trump-style conman who's encircled himself with incompetent yes men, all so focused on bleeding their country into their own bank accounts that it seems there's barely anybody left who knows how to make the tanks run.

That's your hero figure, CPAC? That's who the United States should be admiring and modeling its own government on, Tucker? Wow. You guys really will fall for anything if it comes with a slick propaganda reel.

Republicans never waste a crisis. Their goals for putting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to work for them are just emerging, but one is increasingly clear: Republicans think this is a chance to tank the fight against climate change.

You might think that the fact that much of Russia’s leverage with the rest of the world comes from its ability to supply fossil fuels would be an argument for a transition to clean energy. But not to Republicans. Rising oil prices due to sanctions on Russia are, for them, an argument to drill more in and around the United States.

“AMERICA NEEDS ENERGY INDEPENDENCE we had energy independence b4 Biden energy policy killed it,” Sen. Chuck Grassley tweeted, falsely. How false? “Even when demand plummeted in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. still imported 7.9 million barrels per day, about double the daily use of Japan, the world’s fourth-largest oil consumer,” Politico reports.

”What’s happening in Russia and Europe is a stark reminder of the need to support American energy development, not hinder it,” Sen. Steve Daines said in a statement. “Energy security is national security, and a global energy-dominant America is a safer world. Biden must restart the Keystone XL pipeline now.”

The Keystone XL pipeline was never finished, so stopping construction on it didn’t cause prices to rise, and U.S. imports of Canadian petroleum products have risen pretty steadily without it. And about that: Since Keystone XL was a pipeline from Canada, it’s not clear how it fits with “American energy development.” Unless Daines thinks Canada is so beholden to the U.S. that there’s no difference.

Ahead of the State of the Union, a group of 23 Republican senators sent President Joe Biden a list of 12 demands to “lower skyrocketing energy prices and to help America’s European allies be less dependent on Vladimir Putin’s regime for their energy supply, especially in light of the Ukraine crisis.” Most of the points amount to “drill, baby, drill” (a sentiment echoed on Rep. Lauren Boebert’s State of the Union outfit), but just for good measure, they also called on Biden to fire the White House climate adviser, Gina McCarthy, and the special presidential envoy for climate, John Kerry, because they’re doing their jobs and focusing on fighting climate change. On top of that, the Republicans called on Biden to withdraw Sarah Bloom Raskin’s nomination to a position at the Federal Reserve because of her support of renewable energy.

We’re seeing in real-time how reliance on fossil fuels can be dangerous not just to the climate but in its international implications. And we know that, with its current reliance on fossil fuels, the United States will continue to also rely on imports. The way out of that is not to drill promiscuously right now, right up until every well runs dry and we’re left with no Plan B for energy in addition to the increasingly devastating effects of climate change. The way out is to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels right now, and build up our renewable energy infrastructure. But Republicans aren’t worried, because all they care about is political power, and they’re absolutely ready to try to turn the coming climate crisis—once it can no longer be ignored—into some new angle to seize more power.

 Tucker Carlson raised a furor when he challenged President Biden’s nominee for the Supreme Court to produce academic records predating her time at Havard Law. It was a strange request. And as it was made by Fox News’ leading luminary, suspicions that he had an ulterior motive are well-founded. Bearing that in mind, let us look at what Carlson said.

“So, is Ketanji Brown Jackson – a name that even Joe Biden has trouble pronouncing – one of the top legal minds in the entire country? We certainly hope so. Biden’s right. Appointing her is one of his gravest constitutional duties. So it might be time for Joe Biden to let us know what Ketanji Brown Jackson’s LSAT score was. How did she do on the LSATs? Why wouldn’t you tell us that? That would settle the question conclusively as to whether she’s a once-in-a-generation legal talent, the next Learned Hand. It would seem like Americans in a democracy have a right to know that and much more before giving her a lifetime appointment, but we didn’t hear that.”

Carlson goes straight for the racism — Ketanji. How dare Biden pick someone not named Sandra or Amy? God intended for women on the Supreme Court to have a ‘regular’ name. And not only is it a ‘colored’ name, but her nominator could not even pronounce it. Really? Carlson played a tape of the SOTU in which Biden pronounced her name without any seeming error. Perhaps one of her friends would spot a flub, but I guarantee Carlson is no friend of Judge Jackson’s.

More importantly, whether Biden can pronounce her name, or not, has no bearing on her qualifications. She is either qualified - or she is not. And what qualifies someone for a seat on the Supreme Court? On technical ability and judicial temperament, the ABA rates judges as ‘well qualified’, ‘qualified’ or ‘not qualified’. When President Obama nominated Jackson to the Federal District Court in DC, the ABA rated her ‘well-qualified’. 

Both Trump and George W. Bush dispensed with the ABA rating as part of the nominating process. And, at least in Trump’s case, this was because he wanted judges with a distorted conservative view of the law, regardless of whether they were competent. However, Obama and Biden have accepted the ABA’s independent rating system as a guide for selecting judicial nominees.

Carlson questions Biden’s assertion that Jackson is one of the ‘top legal minds in the entire country’. Is she? The answer is in the eye of the beholder. Take the ‘right to privacy’ that the 1973 Supreme Court used to underpin a women’s constitutional right to an abortion. To supporters of choice, it is self-evident. To anti-choice activists, it is an imaginary right made from whole cloth by an activist court. So we need an objective standard. How about experience?

Jackson has been a federal judge for nine years — longer than Barrett and Thomas. Kagan had not been a judge at all. Not that that means much. Neither had two recent Chief Justices, William Rehnquist and Earl Warren. And Warren is one of the towering justices in Supreme Court history.
Carlson’s ‘objective’ standard for rating judges is now their LSAT scores. I say ‘now’ because he has not demanded the LSAT score of any previous nominee. Which raises the question, why now? The answer — and considering Carlson, it is no surprise — is racism.

It is an article of faith among racists that any Blacks getting into an Ivy league school must have had their skids greased with affirmative action. And the way to prove it is to see a Black applicant's LSAT scores — which in their imagining would prove the applicant was unqualified. (Note: in his autobiography, “My Grandfather’s Son”, Clarence Thomas railed against affirmative action because he believed law firms dismissed his Yale Law degree as a product of the program.)

Carlson's demand for an academic credential mirrors the conservative demand that Obama releases his academic transcripts. Ironically, leading the charge was Trump, who has never released evidence that he was anything but the beneficiary of the affirmative action afforded rich white people. Conservatives who deny their racist motives could but a charge of bigotry to bed by pointing out where they have asked a white person for their academic bona fides. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

Note: Learned Hand was never on the Supreme Court, so how he is relevant is hard to say. Interestingly, one reason this superb jurist was never elevated to the highest court was his clearly held progressive political positions as a youth. That was back in the days when Supreme Court Justices were supposed to be apolitical.

Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert are a disgusting pair of clout-chasers who do offensive things and then gleefully fundraise off of it. They arrived at Tuesday night’s State of the Union determined to make a spectacle of themselves, and appeared throughout the event to be competing for a title, and maybe a cheesy little tiara. If there’s a tiara to be handed out, it would go to Boebert, but not for lack of Greene trying.

To be clear: Boebert and Greene want this attention. They live to own the libs by making asses of themselves, and to rake in the money of the suckers who think it’s great. But if we don’t observe what they’re doing, if we don’t draw a line, the media gets off the hook for normalizing their behavior and the chances that people who don’t pay close attention to politics will understand what today’s Republican Party looks like will shrink even further.

Here’s what the future of the Republican Party looks, and sounds, like. “Greene was heard grumbling through the entire part of Biden's speech about Covid policy before she shouted a remark about women's sports when Biden mentioned new laws targeting transgender Americans and their families,” NBC News reports.

More audibly, when President Joe Biden talked about immigration and the border, Boebert and Greene started chanting “Build the wall,” in clear hopes of leading their fellow Republicans in a major disruption.

Boebert got the most disgusting moment, though. Speaking of service members stationed near burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan, Biden said, “When they came home, many of the world’s fittest and best trained warriors were never the same. Headaches. Numbness. Dizziness. A cancer that would put them in a flag-draped coffin. I know.”

At this, Boebert shouted, “You put them in there, 13 of them.” (For context, 60 U.S. service members died in Afghanistan during Donald Trump’s time in the White House.)

Biden paused briefly as other lawmakers booed and groaned at Boebert’s outburst, before he continued, “One of those soldiers was my son, Major Beau Biden.”

Boebert’s attempt to interject over the 13 soldiers killed in an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, as the U.S. prepared to withdraw didn’t fit the moment in multiple ways. Biden was talking very specifically about the after-effects of burn pits, a fact that was well established before Boebert shouted. And anyone who has ever listened to Biden speak knew that he was about to mention his late, adored son Beau, making Boebert’s heckling a little too crass even for a few Republicans.

“It's something that I think that there's a place. That's not the place to do that,” Republican Sen. Mike Braun said.

”I don’t think there’s any place for that. It’s inappropriate,” Republican Sen. John Thune said on CBS Wednesday morning. “A State of the Union speech, whether you agree with the president or not, is an opportunity to show the American people the respect that the office deserves.”

But Fred Guttenberg, the father of Parkland shooting victim Jaime Guttenberg, had perhaps the most powerful response:

Guttenberg was handcuffed and detained for hours until Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office intervened. Boebert and Greene get deference as members of Congress, but the difference in the treatment of a grieving father versus that of two attention-seeking trolls is nonetheless striking.

Both Boebert and Greene also tweeted through the speech, which Boebert attended wearing a shawl reading, “Drill Baby Drill.”

The Solace for Young Russians Like Me Is That Putin Is Also Digging His Own Grave in Ukraine

When sanctions bite and hard times hit the country, people will lose their fear. Then Putin will be finished

The reason you don’t see a revolution happening in Moscow is not that people don’t care about what’s happening in Ukraine. On the contrary, my social media feed is filled with posts from Russians opposing the war. “What happened?” they say. “How did we get to this? This is madness!”

People are saying they feel guilty about being Russian. People are burning their passports on camera. Hell, I posted: “I am Russian but Putin is not my president.”

But there are far fewer people actually out protesting. You have to understand that ordinary people in Russia are scared out of their minds. On the first day of the conflict, almost 1,000 protesters were jailed across Russia for walking outside with as little as a piece of paper that said: “I don’t want war.” According to the independent media source OVD-info, in the first four days of the war more than 5,200 people were arrested.

My friend spent time in jail for walking down the same street as the protesters. A professor of sociology, Grigory Yudin, was arrested in the centre of Moscow and reportedly beaten up in the back of an autozak (police bus).

There are now more police teams than I can count – with new names such as Rosgvardiya (Russia’s internal military force) – and they are ruthless. These forces were created several years ago specifically to wander the streets of Moscow (and other cities) and prevent anything “suspicious” from happening.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an 18-year-old kid or a pregnant middle-aged woman, they’ll beat you up, put you in a wagon and take you in for questioning. When you have a former KGB agent in charge, you have a country that functions as an enormous jail.

It is painfully clear to us that this war is absolutely pointless. Putin is using false history lessons, lamenting the fall of the Soviet Union, and making claims about Nato advancing its forces simply to justify his own madness. I believe that the true answer to the question people ask on social media – “how did we get to this?” – is that Putin is insane.

I don’t know when or why this happened. Maybe it’s his age. Maybe his isolation during the pandemic caused him to question his legacy. I could believe anything now.

When my wife, who is Ukrainian, and I woke up last Thursday in our Dubai hotel room, our whole world had turned upside down. We turned on Putin’s televised address about the military operation. Twenty minutes later, we turned it off. We were scared by the vagueness of his report. What was a “special military operation”? Was this really a declaration of the third world war? We were disgusted by the theatrical performance of a president we had never chosen. We were even more disgusted by the thought that most people in Russia would believe him.

There’s a huge divide of opinions between the “New Russians” – my generation, people born in the 1990s, who never lived in Soviet times – and the older generation. Not one of my friends back home believes that Putin wasn’t planning this war for some time. The older Russians are fed lies by TV and other media to convince them that what Putin is doing is justifiable.

The big problem is that there is no coherent ideology in Russia. There is no shared way of interpreting the world. Instead, the simplistic idea that has become prevalent is a story of “us v them”. It’s extremely easy to sell and it gets votes. That’s the agenda that Putin has been pushing for the past decade or so.

He says that Ukraine is an enemy that is historically part of Russia but sold itself to Nato, or that everyone in the world is the US’s puppet.

These ideas are so contagious. When you try to reason with an average person in Russia, they might say something like: “The TV is right and you’re wrong. Also – you’re probably an agent of the CIA.” Many people live in ever-present fear and it’s easier for them to believe what they’re told. Standing outside the crowd can cost you your freedom.

None of my younger Russian friends around the globe are surprised. We’re so used to feeling disappointed and embarrassed by our government that we barely feel shame any more. Like children of abusive parents, after so many years we forget what’s normal and what’s not. We simply sigh, shake our heads, and say: “Well, what did you expect?” The “global Russians”, as we call ourselves, long ago gave up on the prospect of having a country and government we’d be proud of.

I can’t help but be reminded of the Soviet war with Afghanistan: 15,000 Russian deaths. Nine years of combat. My mother told me stories of her former classmates, people she actually knew, arriving back in coffins. It was a totally pointless endeavour that cost Leonid Brezhnev the entire economy and helped contribute to the Soviet Union’s collapse.

Putin, who is so keen on history, is unknowingly digging his own grave. With Russia cut off from Swift and facing sanctions from the EU, the US, and the UK, it’ll take only a few years before it runs into extremely hard times. And when it does, people will not be afraid any more. If history teaches us anything, it’s that people – even ones as stubborn and patient as the Russians – will not tolerate a lack of food. When the money runs out, so will Putin’s clock.

And we – the new generation of Russians – will be waiting.

Wow, I never really considered that perspective before.  Trump is the GOOD GUY??!  Biden is a shambolic senile mess? How could I have missed it?  It’s becoming all so clear now. The scales have fallen from my eyes.

Sure, Biden's responsible for Inflation - even though it was created by supply chain issues [and corporate greed] due to Trump blowing the initial response to Covid, and it's because of all Biden's spending except that Trump's [two] stimulus packages were almost twice the size of Biden's.  

And oil and gas prices rising are Biden's fault, except he only canceled the issuing of new leases on public lands and there have now been far more drilling permits issued on the existing leases. Oil production actually went down in 2021 due to covid but has so far recovered to where it was in 2019.

Absolutely Trump left us with a great economy after he improved unemployment under Obama from 4.2% all the amazing way to 3.5% - a massive improvement of 0.7% - and it only took him a short three years to get there.  Then he finally left us with unemployment at 6.3% once the pandemic hit.  After that Biden only improved unemployment from 6.3% to a measly 3.9% - which is only three times as much as Trump's improvement - while re-creating 6.6 million jobs and having an average GDP of 5.7% when Trump's average GDP for his entire time in office was 1.7%.

And Biden's responsible for the Afghanistan pullout that was negotiated and planned entirely under Trump who wouldn't let the Afghan government be involved so it promptly collapsed as their Army — who had been doing the bulk of the fighting since 2014 — dissolved in 19 days. And sure, besides conducting a historic airlift that brought 125,000 people out of the Kabul airport it’s tragically unfortunate that still many of our translators and allies were left behind — but that probably wouldn’t have happened if Trump hadn’t implemented a bigoted Muslim Travel Ban that prevented them from being removed previously.

Sure, Biden's responsible for the invasion of Ukraine because Putin is doing it largely to undermine NATO and previously he had Trump available to do that for him by doing things like ordering our troops out of Germany.  It’s just too bad that dumb ‘ole Biden canceled and reversed that order. And those Javelin missiles that Trump wouldn't give to Ukraine until they ginned up a fake investigation of Biden's son were finally delivered by Biden - so that must have pissed Putin off.
 

And right, we have "zero" respect around the world except that every other country is going along with our sanctions on Russia, even Germany who actually do need the natural gas from that Russian pipeline, but they agreed to cancel the deal anyway.  Yeah, if only they respected Biden who told them to do that.
 

And Biden is responsible for increased migrants at the border because he practically didn't change any of Trump's previous policies including immediate expulsion under Title 42 Covid protocols or "Remain In Mexico" which is still in place. [Thanks to a right-wing Trump nominated Judge]
 

And Biden is responsible for Covid, except that it started under Trump after he had dismantled the Pandemic response group that Obama had made part of the National Security Council, and also dismantled the pandemic fast response teams that had been put in place all over the world, and then threw away the pandemic response plan.
 

Then Trump did "Operation Warp Speed" even though the first company to deliver a vaccine - Pfizer - wasn't part of that program, and Trump did a great job delivering the vaccine to 2 million people before he left DC without leaving a distribution plan so Biden had to improvise and get the vaccine to 240 Million Americans all by himself.

Yep, clearly, Biden is the problem here.

Trump managed to get 2 million people vaccinated for Covid; Biden has vaccinated 240 million.
